The computer buying project allowed me to acquire more knowledge about computers like, for example, different hardware components of the computer and what to consider when purchasing a computer. Overall I found the project to be very informative and a lot of fun as I was able to go on this learning journey with my classmates. I interviewed my Mom so that I could assist her with a computer purchase for her job as a school psychologist. I enjoyed getting to talk to her and finding out what were the most important hardware and software needs in her line of work. My group: however, felt that using one of the provided scenarios would be the best option to find a computer for, so we went with that instead. I have attached a copy of the core finding from the interview sheet as evidence:

We watched several short videos to help us discover and research parts of the computer. My shopping experience included researching computers on the Internet using several search engines and websites.. I explored the Apple and Dell websites and then used a link on “forbes.com” to see which companies offered the best computers. Furthermore, I learned that it is just as important to make sure you have a warranty and compatible software when buying a computer is as the other parts of the computer itself. I narrowed my choices down to four computers. I prepared a chart to compare/contrast the features of each computer. A copy of the chart is attached for viewing inside the slideshow below.
The final part of the project included working in teams. We had to prepare a PowerPoint presentation to demonstrate how to make a computer purchase. Rather than dividing up the work, me and my teammates decided that collaborating on the project would allow us to retain the information rather than just knowing our own peice. We also got to know each others’ skill sets in a group setting, which I thought was very interesting and fun to do.
Barriers I experienced during this process included finding a computer that was the most suitable as it seemed each was so unique. It was also very difficult to select a computer because there are so many to choose from that seemed compatible or were fraudulent. One issue we met as a group was finding someone to assume the “leadership” role because we all seemed to shy away from it. I found it hard sometimes to work because no one was offering up directions or ideas, but in the end we were still able to make the project.
Overall, this project was very fascinating and an effective way for me to learn about what options are available when purchasing a computer. In addition, I learned many new skills in Microsoft Office Word and PowerPoint. I now know how to create tables/charts, create a presentation, add animation to slides, and most importantly be a successful customer at any computer retailer.
